Cybersecurity in the AI Era: Does AI Favor the Defender or the Attacker?
entirelyuseles · x · 2026-08-07
Multiple security experts recently debated on X regarding how AI will reshape the cybersecurity landscape.
- Defense Optimists: Some argue that computer systems have become much safer over the last 30 years driven by human intelligence. AI, as an injection of more intelligence, will ultimately favor defenders in identifying and fixing threats.
- Attack Pessimists: Yoav Goldberg and others counter that AI has certainly made hacking easier. Defenders need time to deploy fixes at scale, whereas attackers can quickly invest effort to find new vectors.
- Diminishing ROI: Security expert Thomas Ptacek pushes back on the attacker advantage, noting that throwing money at attacks doesn't magically create exploitable surfaces; the ROI on attacking eventually diminishes.
