Kimi Sandbox Incident Sparks Debate: Security Experts Call It Marketing Stunt
ShakeelHashim · x · 2026-08-08
AI security researcher @NathanCalvin has expressed skepticism regarding a recent incident where a startup placed the Kimi model in an open sandbox, suggesting it was likely a calculated marketing stunt.
He noted that genuine security incidents typically involve third-party harm or official letters from government investigators requesting record preservation, elements missing from this event. Another user, @MattInThemittel, echoed this sentiment, stating the setup sounded like an advertisement: an obscure startup deliberately left outbound ports open, allowing the model to read GitHub content and easily secure coverage from Wired.
