Scientists Use AI to Design Novel Viruses, Raising Dual-Use Safety Concerns

Scientists have successfully used AI to design entirely novel viral genomes for the first time. Models trained on existing viral sequences can now generate viable variants with a high enough success rate for lab validation.

While this opens doors for medical breakthroughs, it simultaneously raises significant dual-use safety risks. Existing safety layers in these models are still far from comprehensive, making the control and pace of safety filters a critical challenge for the biotech and AI safety communities.
