Stanford HAI: Regulatory Boundaries for AI Mental Health Tools Remain Blurred
StanfordHAI · x · 2026-08-08
Stanford HAI explores the complexities of governing AI mental health tools. As demand for therapy surges, AI tools offering emotional support and cognitive behavioral therapy have rapidly expanded.
While these tools offer potential cost reductions and increased accessibility, they carry risks due to a lack of clear regulation and third-party testing. Currently, there is no consensus on what constitutes an AI mental health tool or where the line falls between clinical functions and wellness features. This ambiguity leads to fragmented regulation and leaves companies operating in gray areas, posing potential psychological and safety risks to users.
