OpenAI Cannot Rule Out Next Model Astra Has 'Critical' Cyber Capabilities
scottleibrand · x · 2026-08-08
OpenAI stated it cannot rule out that its upcoming model, Astra, possesses 'Critical' cyber capabilities as defined in its Preparedness Framework. This level implies the model could autonomously identify zero-day exploits or execute end-to-end novel cyberattack strategies against hardened targets.
Boaz Barak from OpenAI emphasized the company is erring on the side of caution to develop Astra responsibly. Commentator Dean Ball noted that such security decisions are costly as they slow down internal development.
