Google Earth recently integrated a generative AI feature allowing users to overlay AI-generated scenes onto real satellite and 3D imagery. However, the rollout was halted less than 24 hours after launch.
Abuse and Rollback
Users quickly exploited the tool to create disinformation, generating fabricated images tied to real-world locations, such as a nuclear plant in Iran and refugees at the US-Mexico border.
Official Response
A Google spokesperson clarified that the generated images did not appear in the main experience for others and were watermarked. Nevertheless, the feature was pulled to preserve the platform's reputation as a reliable view of the world.
