Developer Builds DIY ChatGPT Desktop Pet Ahead of OpenAI's 2027 Hardware

With OpenAI and Jony Ive's AI device reportedly not shipping until 2027, an impatient developer created Chat-PET, a physical desktop companion for ChatGPT using Raspberry Pi and ESP32.
Rather than running ChatGPT itself, the device acts as a physical interface for the app. Key features include:
- A 320×240 display for the native Pet, activity bubbles, and Live Orb
- An 11W speaker and two removable microphones
- Physical controls for volume, dictation, Live mode, and navigation
- Single USB cable connectivity
The developer deliberately included a screen to show the AI's status (e.g., listening or thinking). The software is open-source on GitHub and can be ported to other ESP32 devices with displays.
