The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has officially launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative, aiming to build a new class of open-weight foundation models designed specifically to accelerate scientific discovery. The DOE is currently requesting input and contributions from commercial, academic, and research institutions.

The first model under this initiative, Genesis-Science-1, will be developed in partnership with AI company Arcee. By releasing transparent and reproducible open-source models, the DOE hopes to lower barriers to advanced AI capabilities and drive innovation in scientific workflows across materials discovery, energy systems, earth system modeling, fusion, biology, and high-energy physics.
