parakeet.wgsl: Transcribes 1 Hour of Audio in 20 Seconds via WebGPU
hamza_q_ · reddit · 2026-08-08
Developer hamzaq released parakeet.wgsl, a high-performance ASR project relying entirely on raw WebGPU compute shaders and a SIMD WebAssembly audio frontend. It runs NVIDIA's Parakeet TDT 0.6B V2 model locally in the browser.
Performance:
- Transcribes 1 hour of audio in just 20 seconds on an Apple M5 processor using Chrome.
Technical Features:
- Fully custom, dependency-free implementation.
- Cross-platform as long as the device supports WebGPU.
- Since WebGPU transpiles to almost any GPU, it opens a path for offline integration outside the browser via Dawn or wgpu, bringing hardware-accelerated local transcription to nearly all devices.
