Qualcomm Pushes Native On-Device AI Agents, Challenging NPU-Centric Narratives

Qualcomm recently published an article highlighting agentic AI applications running natively on Snapdragon X Series systems, featuring five ISV partners and native desktop versions of Claude, ChatGPT, etc. The author points out that current discussions around on-device AI are overly focused on NPU TOPS and local inference.

In reality, an agentic harness does much more than run a model: it watches, plans, calls tools, opens files, hits the network, and spawns processes. These background operations rely heavily on traditional CPU, memory, and I/O resources. Running multiple background agents effectively equates to having multiple concurrent users on a laptop, posing new challenges for system responsiveness, battery life, and thermals.
