Security researcher Sterling Crispin issued a stark warning that the rapid proliferation of open-source AI agents is paving the way for a new type of cybersecurity disaster. He predicts the emergence of AI-powered worms spreading similarly to the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack.
These AI worms could autonomously infect hundreds of thousands or millions of computers, running independently on local machines rather than centralized servers. They would act as independent AI agents capable of taking over systems, deleting files, and holding them for ransom. Crispin emphasized that this is not a hypothetical threat, but a reality merely weeks or months away.
