Qwen3.8-Max Bio-AI Reasoning Tested: Shows Intuition but Lacks 3D Structural Insight

Insilico Medicine tested the bio-AI reasoning capabilities of Qwen3.8-Max. In tests on bovine rhodopsin, the model correctly deduced that the E113→Q mutation is disruptive and identified that L112I is relatively mutation-tolerant.

However, it missed a key structural insight: L112 faces the lipid bilayer rather than the retinal-binding pocket, which is the mechanistic explanation for its higher mutation tolerance. This indicates that while the model possesses strong biochemical intuition, there is still room to improve its understanding of the 3D structural context governing protein function.
