Researchers from Stanford University and Arc Institute published a preprint demonstrating the use of genome language models to generate novel bacteriophages unseen in nature, which have been tested as viable.
Although released on bioRxiv almost a year ago, the study recently gained mainstream attention via NYT under the headline of AI creating new kinds of viruses. This marks a major breakthrough for generative AI in biological sequence design and raises important AI biosecurity discussions.
