Scientists at Stanford University and the Arc Institute have used AI to create entirely new kinds of viruses for the first time, with the research published in Science.
Technical Breakthrough:
- The research team trained AI to recognize patterns in natural DNA structures, and the model was then used to write genomic "recipes" for novel viruses.
- Following these recipes, scientists synthesized DNA, inserted it into bacteria, and successfully cultivated 16 viable viruses not found in nature, capable of infecting other bacteria.
