WeatherNext Cyclones: AI Hurricane Forecasting Beats GenCast Speed by 8x

Google researchers introduced WeatherNext Cyclones, an AI weather forecasting system that marks the transition of AI meteorology from benchmark testing to operational tools.
Key Technical Highlights:
- Joint Prediction: Predicts the global atmospheric state alongside tropical cyclone track, intensity, and size simultaneously.
- Hybrid Training: Co-trained on decades of global atmospheric analyses and a specialist database of nearly 5,000 historical cyclones for effective knowledge transfer.
- Efficient Probabilistic Inference: Represents uncertainty through large ensembles of physically coherent trajectories. Uses a probabilistic objective and functional generative networks requiring only one neural-network evaluation per forecast step.
- Speed Advantage: Inference is about 8× faster than diffusion-based GenCast, enabling significantly larger ensembles.
