Stanford Researchers Use AI to Design Novel, Functional Viruses

US researchers at Stanford University have successfully utilized artificial intelligence to design brand new, fully functional viruses capable of replicating in a laboratory setting. This marks the first time AI has been used to design a complete viral genome.
The 16 novel viruses created in the study are designed to infect bacteria and pose no threat to humans. The AI models, Evo1 and Evo2, function similarly to large language models like ChatGPT but predict the "language of life"—genetic sequences—rather than text.
While the breakthrough is hailed as a significant turning point that could unlock new disease treatments, experts have also issued urgent warnings regarding the safety and security implications of AI-designed biological entities.
