A Reddit user reported a hidden billing threshold when using Claude Sonnet for intensive research tasks. The system can trigger API credit consumption without permission, even before the 5-hour session or weekly subscription limits are exhausted.
The user raised three main issues: there is no UI progress bar to manage this usage; incurring pay-as-you-go billing before the subscription is depleted defeats the purpose of the plan; and this mechanism is poorly documented, unpredictable, and cannot be opted out of.
