Stanford Researchers Use AI to Design Fully Functional Novel Viruses

US researchers have successfully used AI to design 16 brand new bacteriophage viruses with genomes entirely generated by machines. These viruses have been proven to replicate and infect bacteria in the laboratory.

This marks the first time AI has successfully designed a complete biological genome. Stanford's Professor Brian Hie noted this as a significant milestone in generative AI's capability for complex biological design. While these specific viruses pose no threat to humans and could unlock new disease treatments, experts warned that AI-designed viruses raise urgent biosafety and security concerns.
