SpaceX and Nvidia Team Up to Put Data Center AI Compute into Orbit

SpaceX has announced a collaboration with Nvidia to design Starmind AI1, a space-based AI compute satellite payload aimed at putting data center-level compute into orbit.
- Hardware: The satellite will be equipped with Nvidia Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. Once deployed, it will stand 30 meters tall with a 75-meter wingspan, featuring a peak compute power of 250kW.
- Cooling & Energy: It utilizes a 160m² deployable liquid radiator to dissipate heat directly into the vacuum of space, bypassing terrestrial cooling limits. A sun-synchronous orbit ensures continuous solar power, bypassing Earth's grid constraints.
- Future Plans: SpaceX is building a Gigasat factory to mass-produce thousands of AI satellites by late 2027. Furthermore, a joint venture with Tesla plans to build 'Terafab', a wafer fab targeting an annual output of 1 terawatt of AI compute capacity.
