Paper Audits Multimodal Recommenders: Per-User Modality Weighting Shows No Consistent Benefit

A recent study challenges the actual benefits of per-user modality weighting in multimodal recommenders.
Researchers conducted a controlled audit of six mainstream implementations across three independent short-video corpora. The findings reveal that a single global weight already delivers nearly all content gains (+1.9 to 3.5pp over a no-modality baseline). Making the weight per-user adds no consistent utility: no implementation wins across all corpora and metrics, and the few positive gaps are minimal (≤0.9pp) and prone to flipping.
