Scholars Downgrade Deepfake Threat: Society Already Saturated with Lies

Tim Lee recently reflected that over the past 2-3 years, he has significantly downgraded his concerns about the threat of AI deepfakes to public discourse. He originally believed deepfake technology would heavily impact major events like elections, but its actual influence has been quite modest so far.
Noah Smith agreed, but offered a slightly darkly comedic reason: social media has already completely saturated our discourse with lies and bullshit, leaving no room for AI to make things worse.
