Scientists Call Out Media Hype on AI-Designed Viruses: Just Remixed Known Mutations
lpachter · x · 2026-08-07
Responding to recent news that "AI successfully designed 16 new viruses capable of replicating inside cells," experts point out that this is a wild overstatement.
In reality, AI simply remixed a small number of mostly already-observed, largely synonymous mutations, and in a few rare cases, managed to make them nonlethal. The media hype oversells the actual achievements for attention.
