UNC and Stanford Introduce Handroid: A Desktop Robot Transforming into a Dexterous Hand

UNC Chapel Hill and Stanford University introduced Handroid, a reconfigurable desktop robot. Standing 0.33 meters tall with 27 degrees of freedom, it can seamlessly switch between a 'bipedal humanoid' and a 'multi-fingered dexterous hand'.
- Concept: Leveraging the topological similarity between the human body and hand, it reuses the same electromechanical system. Modules form the head and limbs for movement, or reconfigure into five fingers for precise manipulation.
- Implementation: Shape-shifting is achieved via sliding rails and gear-rack transmissions without disassembly. An electromagnetic flange allows quick connection/disconnection to an external robotic arm.
- Results: Achieved a 72% average grasping success rate in dexterous tasks. In humanoid form, it performs walking, turning, and push-ups, successfully demonstrating a long-horizon task bridging both forms. The project is fully open-source.
