Replit CEO: Google Killed Coding Model Deal to Protect Its Search Monopoly

Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, revealed that Google killed a potential coding model deal because it feared disrupting its highly profitable Search product. Masad noted that in 2023, before AI coding gained broad Silicon Valley traction, Replit engaged with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, ultimately deciding to train its own models after the Google deal fell through.
Furthermore, he doubled down on his stance that learning to code is no longer necessary, arguing that non-technical entrepreneurs might actually hold an advantage because they aren't distracted by underlying architecture and can focus purely on the product.
