Why Aren't AI Agents Mainstream Yet? Trust and Awareness Are the Biggest Barriers
HankYeomans · x · 2026-08-07
Despite the rapid advancement of frontier AI models and agent platforms, the average consumer (non-tech users) rarely uses AI agents in their daily lives.
Industry observers note that the consumer AI market is essentially ChatGPT's and Google's to lose. While ChatGPT has roughly 1 billion users, it faces two major hurdles: a lack of trust among users to grant AI full access to their apps and data, and a general unawareness of ChatGPT's current capabilities. Thus, marketing and messaging are just as critical as product improvements.
Meanwhile, Google Gemini also has nearly 1 billion users, and people may trust it more for ecosystem integration (email, calendar, browser) due to its unified login system. However, Google still lags in critical features like third-party plugins and browser control, and needs to elevate the Gemini app experience to be best-in-class.
