AI-Designed Viruses Raise Biosafety Concerns

Scientists have used an AI model to design new bacteriophages not found in nature. Out of 285 AI-designed genomes tested, 16 produced viable viruses. While the work could advance medicine and biotechnology, it raises significant concerns that similar AI tools could be misused to create dangerous pathogens, highlighting the urgent need for stronger biosafety safeguards.
