Stanford Researchers Use AI to Design 16 Novel Functional Viruses

US researchers have successfully used artificial intelligence to design 16 brand new, fully functional viruses capable of replicating in the laboratory. This marks the first time AI has been used to design complete viral genomes.
Led by a Stanford University team, the study utilized AI models named Evo1 and Evo2. Similar to large language models predicting text, these models were trained on the genetic codes of viruses, bacteria, plants, and humans to predict and generate the "language of life."
Currently, these AI-designed bacteriophages only target bacteria like E. coli and pose no threat to humans. The breakthrough is hailed as a "very significant turning point" in science that could unlock new disease treatments. However, experts have also issued urgent warnings regarding the severe safety and biosecurity concerns raised by AI-designed viruses.
