8,000 Photos into 6M Gaussians: WebGPU Renders Photorealistic 3D Macro Mushroom
willeastcott · x · 2026-08-07
A developer showcased an incredibly photorealistic 3D reconstruction of a macro subject using 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) rendered via WebGPU.
The model features a tiny mushroom composed of over 6 million Gaussians. To capture the extreme detail, the creator took 103 different perspectives with 79 focus-stacked images each, processing a total of 8,137 high-resolution photos using a Nikon Z8. The final result is rendered smoothly in the browser using the PlayCanvas engine.
