Following recent shifts at Google, AGI researcher Ben Goertzel shared an in-depth analysis of the underlying dynamics:
- End of DeepMind Autonomy: The move signals the end of DeepMind as a semi-autonomous unit, fully integrating it into Google as a regular division.
- Non-LLM Projects at Risk: With the critical exception of Shane Legg's team, other non-Gemini/LLM AGI R&D projects within DeepMind are likely to be axed or left to wither.
- Demis Hassabis's Strategy: Demis might believe that while LLMs are inelegant, their immense momentum could get them to the first Human-Level AGI, which would then self-improve into a more elegant ASI architecture.
- Jeff Dean's Departure: One interpretation is that Dean and others don't view LLMs as the golden path to AGI and wish to pursue alternative routes not currently supported by Google's strategy. Another is that they see LLMs leading to AGI across multiple companies simultaneously, making their presence unnecessary for that specific race, prompting them to focus on other complex scientific and automation challenges instead.
