On July 24, the Black at Mila community hosted an event focused on the future of AI evaluation.

Prof. Vukosi Marivate (University of Pretoria) delivered a talk titled "What Do Our Benchmarks Actually Measure?". He pointed out that current NLP benchmarks, built on assumptions from well-resourced languages, capture only a narrow slice of linguistic reality. He advocated for evaluation frameworks that genuinely reflect linguistic diversity and community priorities.

Following the presentation, Mila founder Yoshua Bengio joined Marivate for a fireside chat exploring AI safety, governance, research ecosystem building, and whose priorities ultimately shape global AI development.
