Visualizing 1M tokens: A visual history from GPT-3's 2K to today's million-token models
nutlope · x · 2026-08-07
Developer nutlope launched 1millioncontext.com, a visual tool that illustrates what 1 million tokens actually represent and traces the evolution of context windows from GPT-3's 2,048 tokens to today's 1M+ models.
The site visualizes 1M tokens as 3,000 pages, 750,000 words, or a 30cm stack of paper, and highlights key milestones: GPT-3 (June 2020, 2K), ChatGPT (Nov 2022, 4K), GPT-4 32K (Mar 2023), Claude 100K (May 2023), and Gemini 1.5 Pro as the first to reach 1M (Feb 2024).
