fchollet: The Strongest Architecture Today is Symbolic-Led Neurosymbolic Systems

fchollet · x · 2026-08-06

Keras creator François Chollet shared deep insights into neurosymbolic architectures. He noted that the debate over whether the outer level of a system should be symbolic or neural has been settled: the outer level is currently symbolic.

He describes this as a 'symbolic sandwich' where a symbolic program drives a neural model while making tool calls and running symbolic scripts during its inference cycle. This maximalist vision aligns with his definition of agents: a million-line harness orchestrating thousands of neural network calls at inference time is the exact definition of a neurosymbolic architecture.
