Jeff Dean and Top Execs Leave to Found Discovery Loop Amid DeepMind Reshuffle
Latent Space · rss · 2026-08-06
Google DeepMind is experiencing a historic leadership shakeup: core veterans Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le are departing to co-found Discovery Loop, a Public Benefit Corporation focused on automating machine learning, science, and engineering. The startup has raised a seed round led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Alphabet.
Simultaneously, Demis Hassabis is transitioning to Chair and Chief Scientist, stepping back from daily operations to focus on long-term strategy, AGI, and science. Koray Kavukcuoglu has been promoted to SVP, taking operational control of Gemini, frontier research, and product teams.
Industry commentators suggest this exodus, combined with other recent high-profile departures, raises concerns about Google's AI talent retention and execution. The launch of Discovery Loop also signals that AI-driven automated scientific research is becoming a primary industry frontier.
