Obsidian Makes Commercial Use Completely Free, Shifts to Sponsorship Model

Note-taking app Obsidian announced that its Commercial license is now optional, making the app free for work use for both individuals and organizations. The company stated the change simplifies pricing and removes barriers for employees worried about compliance.

Founder kepano explained that the previous per-seat model was hard to enforce without mandatory signups. By shifting to an optional sponsorship model, they bet that overall usage growth will ultimately drive more revenue, despite some companies stopping their payments.
