shadcn, the creator of the popular UI component library, published a profound reflection on how AI agents impact software creation. He noted that a new component he spent days designing, testing, and refining was copied and ported to another framework within hours of release, simply by pointing an AI agent at his code.
While open-source licenses permit this, he raised a critical question: What if this was someone's first product? What if they spent months building it, launched on Friday, and by Monday it was cloned by agents, repackaged, and made free?
He pointed out that copying used to require effort and understanding, which fostered appreciation for the original creator. Now, AI makes reproduction effectively free. If both ideas and execution become cheap, and creators bear the full cost of creativity while copycats pay nothing, it could kill the will to create for beginners. He urged the community to set a responsible default for how we use AI, rather than just stripping every new idea for parts.
