Ex-DeepMind Researcher: Executive Exits Are Bets on the Next Tech Frontier

Regarding the recent role changes of Demis Hassabis and Jeff Dean at Google DeepMind, Zachary Lipton argues that treating this as bearish for GDM is a misread.

He points out that the prospect of reaching AGI and ASI is beginning to look increasingly overdetermined. Given this trend, being in operational leadership roles to preside over an overdetermined outcome is no longer as high-leverage as taking a leadership role on the next frontier. He predicts that over the next year, early AI/AGI/ASI leads will begin leaving what look like important leadership posts to place their bets on what they believe will be the most important thing in the future.
