MCP 2.0 Spec Shifts to Stateless Architecture, Greatly Simplifying Agent Development

Simon Willison highlighted that the MCP 2.0 spec (2026-07-28) makes stateless servers first-class citizens, reigniting interest in the Model Context Protocol.
- Protocol Evolution: MCP was previously considered stateful and fiddly, eventually getting eclipsed by Anthropic's Skills and the flexibility of giving agents direct shell access.
- Stateless Advantages: While granting an agent shell access is risky and requires a strong model, MCP tools are easier to audit and control. Stateless MCP is simple enough that even smaller models running locally on a laptop can drive them reasonably well.
- Developer Experience: The new spec greatly decreases the complexity of implementing both clients and servers. Willison built two new tools (mcp-explorer and datasette-mcp) this week, suggesting that developers who shelved MCP for being too fiddly should give it a second look.
