Shopify's engineering team shared details of the continual learning flywheel powering their AI product, Sidekick. This mechanism addresses the challenges of high costs, latency, and the inability of frontier models to learn autonomously from production failures at scale.
The core idea is to compress hard-won production knowledge—such as user corrections and failures—directly into the model's weights, rather than relying solely on external artifacts like prompt edits or routing rules. Using this approach, Shopify's GraphQL agent not only achieves higher quality than frontier models but also reduces serving costs by 96%.
