After getting no reply from OpenAI, a developer built OpenConfer, an open-source, self-hosted human decision infrastructure for AI agents.
- Core Mechanism: When an autonomous agent hits a decision point in a workflow, it pauses and directly calls the developer on the phone.
- Interaction: The human and the agent discuss the issue via voice like real collaborators. Once a decision is confirmed, the agent receives a structured outcome (e.g., JSON) and resumes the original run.
- Tech Stack: Model-agnostic (supports any local or hosted model), allows custom voice and speech pipelines, and is Apache 2.0 licensed.
