Visualizing Synaptic Signaling with Music: How SSRIs and Other Drugs Work

awjuliani · x · 2026-08-06

Developer awjuliani created Synaptic Score, an interactive and musical animation tool designed to intuitively convey the mechanisms of different drugs at the synaptic level.

Accessible via a browser, the tool translates the spatiotemporal patterns of receptor signaling into musical and visual elements. For example, it vividly demonstrates how reuptake inhibitors (like SSRIs such as fluoxetine) block transporters on the presynaptic cell, leaving more neurotransmitters available in the synaptic cleft to bind to the postsynaptic cell and generate additional signaling.
