Brainstorm: Packaging VSCode Itself as an MCP Server
Ambitious-Prompt-975 · reddit · 2026-08-06
A developer released an open-source tool called mcp-vscode-mcpapp that flips the conventional integration script: instead of plugging an MCP Server into VSCode, it packages VSCode itself as an MCP Server.
Bundled with OpenVSCode, the tool runs as a completely standalone environment. Once the workspace directory is configured, MCP-App compatible clients can render the VSCode UI inline. Other clients can access it via a browser URL. This provides a new integration paradigm for manipulating and managing code repositories directly within agent workflows.
