Stanford HAI: Open-Weight Models Aren't Enough, We Need Truly Open Source AI

Stanford HAI's James Landay argues that the current open-weight AI debate is framed incorrectly. As Chinese open-weight models from companies like DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI close the performance gap with US counterparts, policymakers in Washington and Silicon Valley are increasingly focusing on cybersecurity risks.
Landay points out that merely releasing model weights is insufficient. Without access to the training data, code, and methodology, external researchers cannot properly audit, reproduce, or challenge the work. For the benefit of science and society, the industry needs to move towards fully open-source AI models rather than settling for open-weight distributions.
