ByteDance founder has reportedly banned employees from distilling US frontier models, fearing it could provoke Washington and put TikTok at risk again.

Previously, Anthropic accused DeepSeek, Moonshot, Minimax, ZAI, and Alibaba of distilling Claude, but did not name ByteDance. The internal stance emphasizes a willingness to 'sacrifice some short-term gains for longer-term goals,' strictly prohibiting distillation even at the cost of losing competitive ground.
