As US power grid strains under AI data center demand, BasePower, founded by Michael Dell's son Zachary Dell, has raised $1 billion in Series D funding at a $13 billion valuation, with total funding exceeding $2.5 billion. Investors include a16z and JPMorgan.
BasePower's 'electricity membership' model: in Texas, customers pay a $695 installation fee and $19 monthly fee for a free home battery. The battery charges during low-price periods, discharges during peak to earn arbitrage, and serves as backup during outages. Churn rate is below 0.5%.
In under 3 years, the company has installed over 23,000 batteries in Texas and Illinois, deploying over 500 MWh of storage. Zachary aims to make energy storage accessible to everyone, addressing surging electricity demand from AI.
