Can Chatbots Cure Loneliness? A French Experiment Tests 12,000 People
steverathje2 · x · 2026-08-05
A randomized controlled experiment from France explored whether generative AI can help solve the loneliness epidemic. Researchers assigned about 12,000 participants into two groups: the treatment group (6,000 people) was encouraged to have at least one personal conversation with an AI daily for 28 days, while the control group lived as usual.
Initial results showed that treated participants actively increased their frequency of chatting with AI. The study provides empirical data on how AI companionship affects human mental well-being.
