OpenAI Model Margins Under Pressure as DeepSeek Matches Cost Efficiency
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-08-05
An analysis suggests that OpenAI's profit margins for the Luna model in subscriptions might now be lower than DeepSeek's. Despite OpenAI's hardware advantages and Luna being heavily overtrained and distilled, there's a limit to cost reduction, and they are pushing hard to remain the Pareto-dominant option.
According to comparative data from DeepSeek-Vision, Luna at best only reaches parity with DeepSeek. On the Pareto frontier of cost-efficiency, the 0731-Max model sits between Luna-high and xhigh.
