Extropic's Z1 Chip Uses Thermodynamic Computing for 10,000x Transistor Reduction

Extropic founder Guillaume Verdon (@beffjezos) detailed the company's new Z1 chip and its software stack. The Z1 chip is based on thermodynamic computing principles, has successfully taped out, and will be available as 0.5M pbit memory sticks and 4M pbit PCIe cards.
Core Technology:
- Probabilistic Bits (pbits): Unlike traditional bits that are strictly 0 or 1, pbits oscillate between the two states (like a flickering dimmer switch), representing fractional probabilities.
- Massive Efficiency: This mechanism allows the Z1 to run AI algorithms using approximately 10,000 times fewer transistors than traditional digital chips like GPUs.
- Hardware Boltzmann Machines: Tracing neural networks back to Hinton's energy-based models, Z1 implements literal, highly dense Boltzmann machines directly in physical hardware.
- Software Stack: Extropic also announced Torx and Thermalizers, serving as the PyTorch and low-level kernels equivalent for thermodynamic hardware.
