A New Era of Theory-Driven AI Research: Frontier Models Accelerate Math
aaron_defazio · x · 2026-08-05
AI researcher Aaron De Mello argues that the paradigm of AI theory research has fundamentally shifted. While empirical exploration previously led and theory lagged behind, frontier models can now perform useful mathematics beyond toy problems, automating grunt-work that used to take weeks.
Although models might not be as smart as the very best human researchers, their speed makes it possible to rapidly develop theories that actually drive AI research forward, rather than just explaining it post-hoc.
