NVIDIA Launches Alpamayo 2: An Open Reasoning Model for Autonomous Vehicles

NVIDIA has officially launched Alpamayo 2 Super, a frontier open reasoning model specifically designed for autonomous vehicles (AVs).
- Capabilities: Beyond mere visual perception, the model understands and reasons through complex real-world environments, enabling it to "think before it acts."
- Applications: It serves as a powerful backbone for billions of autonomous machines, including robotaxis, trucks, shuttles, delivery vans, tractors, and a long tail of mobile robots.
- Open Source: Released under the OpenMDW-1.1 license, the model allows commercial teams to inspect, fine-tune, and deploy it, ultimately advancing system safety and security.
In a related interview, Ali Kani, GM of Automotive at NVIDIA, shared the design philosophy behind their AV platform (including DRIVE AV, Halos, and Hyperion). He emphasized that a robust self-driving system must strike a balance between being "bold" and "risk-averse"—acting decisively in complex traffic like a seasoned human driver while maintaining strict safety and traceability to evolve smoothly from Level 2 to higher autonomy levels.
