Researcher: No Downside to Publishing Sloppy Papers If You Outrun the Blast

Responding to the idea that publishing low-quality papers damages an author's future reputation, AI researcher Rylan Schaeffer offers a different perspective.
He points out a sad truth: by the time the academic community figures out the problems in a paper, the author(s) have often already leveraged those publications to abscond to higher and better positions. As long as authors can outrun the blast radius of their flawed work, there are no real downsides for them. This highlights a flaw in current academic quality control and accountability mechanisms.
